DESCRIPTION:Title\nMathematics in the Modern World\nSpeaker\nProf. Efim Zelmanov\nDirector of the Shenzhen International Center for Mathematics, Southern University of Science and Technology\nForeign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences\nMember of the National Academy of Sciences\nFields Medal, 1994\nGuangdong Friendship Award, 2023\nTime and Location\n19:00-20:00 (Beijing Time), 14:00-15:00 (Israel Time), December 10, 2025 (Wednesday), GTIIT Auditorium, South Campus\nZoom\nhttps://gtiit.zoom.us/j/9630844007?omn=93773453749\nAbstract\nToday Mathematics shapes our lives even if we don’t realize it. I will discuss the special nature of Mathematics and applications to AI, cybersecurity, medical imaging etc.\nBio\nProfessor Efim Zelmanov is a renowned mathematician, a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a Fields Medalist, a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences. He is also a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Zelmanov’s work primarily focuses on non-associative algebra and group theory. He solved the Restricted Burnside Problem, one of the oldest and most influential problems in finite group theory, which was posed in 1902 and had perplexed group theorists and algebraists throughout the 20th century. For his groundbreaking contributions, he was awarded the Fields Medal in 1994.\nHe has held positions at several prestigious institutions, including Professor at the Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1980), Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1990-1994), and Professor at the University of Chicago (1994-1995). Since 2002, he has served as a Chair Professor at the University of California, San Diego. In February 2019, he became the Director of the Zelmanov Mathematical Center at Southern University of Science and Technology. In July 2022, he became a chair professor at Southern University of Science and Technology.\nFree pizza will be provided!\n\n
