Biography
Prof. Leonid Pismen, the distinguished Julius M. and Bernice Naiman Chair in Fluid Mechanics at Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, has been a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering since 1975 and has held the Naiman Professorship since 1993 (Emeritus since 2005). A Fellow of the American Physical Society since 2015, he earned his Ph.D. in 1963 from the Karpov Physico-Chemical Institute in Moscow, specializing in surface phenomena and multiscale processes.
Prof. Pismen’s research spans several key areas:
- Multiscale Mechanisms of Epithelial Patterning and Morphogenesis – Studies focusing on the diversity and dynamics of expression patterns, pattern formation mechanisms, and their connection with morphogenesis.
- Patterns and Defects in Nonlinear Systems – Development of tools for studying the formation and evolution of patterns, especially in reaction-diffusion systems and optical feedback devices.
- Motion of Contact Lines and Dynamics of Interfaces – Analysis of the motion and stability of three-phase boundaries under intermolecular forces and transport processes.
Prof. Pismen has authored several notable works, including:
- Active Matter Within and Around Us: From Self-Propelled Particles to Flocks and Living Forms (2021)
- Patterns and Interfaces in Dissipative Dynamics (2006)
