Abstract

We have adopted the use of green chemistry approaches in the design and synthesis of polymeric materials used for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. To improve the biocompatibility of biomaterials, natural compounds such as bile acids and carbohydrates are used as starting materials in the preparation of a variety of new polymers after chemical modifications. These materials range from self-healing hydrogels, degradable elastomers with shape-memory properties to hard dental restauration composites. Enzymes have been also used as catalysts in the synthesis and modification of polymers.

Biography

Xiao-Xia Zhu is a professor of chemistry at University of Montreal. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Polymeric Biomaterials. His team works on the research and development of new polymers for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications, including degradable polymers, hydrogels, drug delivery systems and dental composites. His primary interests focus on the use of natural compounds for the preparation of novel polymeric materials with green chemistry approaches. He is a co-author of over 290 scientific publications and several patents. He also received the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada.
