The limited resources on raw materials, challenges with environmental pollution, a steadily growing energy demand, safe and environmentally friendly transportation, or medical applications are examples relying on innovations in materials science and engineering. This overview presentation focusses on a few examples highlighting contributions to an improved material understanding by analyzing materials especially at the microstructure length scale down to atomic dimensions. This is made possible by advanced electron microscopy techniques that allow imperfections in materials to be resolved, while miniaturized mechanical testing and other in-situ experiments can provide previously unexplored links to microstructure.

Bio

Prof. Gerhard Dehm was born 1965 in Ansbach. Study of material science at the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen-Nürnberg with a focus on materials for electro-technology, glass and ceramic, electronic devices. 1995 doctoral degree at the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart (summa cum laude). After one year of post-doc in Stuttgart, he spend two years as a guest scientist at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) in Haifa with a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt society. 1999 return to the MPI for Metals Research as a group leader with a research focus on thin metallic films. 2005 professor of Material Physics at the University of Leoben. At the same time Dehm became director of the Erich Schmid Institute for Material Science of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Head of the Department Materials Physics at the Montanuniversität Leoben. He is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials since 2012 and Professor at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Free pizza will be provided!

Title Materials science: more necessary than ever for a sustainable future Speaker Prof. Gerhard Dehm Director at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials Professor at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum Time and Location 19:00-20:00 (Beijing Time), 14:00-15:00 (Israel Time), April 7, 2025 (Monday), GTIIT Auditorium, South Campus Zoom https://gtiit.zoom.us/j/9630844007?omn=94918733552 Abstract Material science and engineering is a […]

[42
380
