Abstract
This study intends to explore the reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification machineries of anammox bacteria, previously recognized as strict anaerobes, through comparative genomic approaches. A high-resolution alignment of anammox bacterial genomes and ROS scavenging enzymes was conducted to underpin the well-known ROS detoxification mechanisms of anammox bacteria and explore uncharted ROS detoxification pathways. Our preliminary results indicated that multi ROS scavenging enzymes were prevalent in Brocadia, Scalindua and Kuenenia. Besides, a genome-scale metabolic network (GSMN) platform will be built to better explore the metabolic mechanisms and functional capacity of anammox bacteria. This study offers insights into the anti-oxidative defense mechanisms of anammox bacteria, leading to in-depth understandings of their survival niche in aerophilic ecosystems and artificial systems.
