Abstract

Note-taking is known to boost learning and recall. With cloud computing and shared online documents, students can now take notes together online. This seminar will present research (n=357) conducted at a Korean university, focusing on how collaborative note-taking affects learning and note quality in an online scientific writing course. The research analyzed behaviors like the number of words written, editing others’ work, frequency of writing, and turn-taking.

Key findings include:

  1. For better individual performance, students should write more and interact more with each other’s notes, but not necessarily write more frequently.
  2. For better group performance, groups should focus on adding content rather than removing it.
  3. For higher-quality notes, groups should divide tasks rather than work on them together intensively.

These insights offer practical tips for effective collaborative note-taking using shared online documents.
