Abstract

Wetting phenomena have been studied for more than 200 years. Still, many fundamental questions are not understood. For example, the speed of a water drop moving down an inclined plane cannot be predicted. What is the friction of a sliding drop and how does it depend on the velocity? Answering this question remains a challenge because friction depends on nanoscopic process at the contact line. It is, however, worth to face this challenge because wetting is important for many applications such as coating, painting, flotation, keeping glasses transparent. The aim of the presentation is to draw attention to some new developments in research about dynamics of wetting.

Bio

Prof. Hans-Jürgen Butt was born 1961 in Hamburg, Germany. He is the director at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, member of EU Academy of Sciences, and the president of the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists (IACIS). He has received the European Research Council Advanced Grant twice, published more than 500 papers, including papers in Nature and its sister journals, Science, PRL, PNAS, and Adv. Mater., and served as the Advisory Board of Langmuir. He has made extraordinary contribution to Interfacial Phenomena, especially the super-amphiphobic surfaces, droplet pinning, contact angle hysteresis, and microscopic contact line dynamics.
