Dear All,

China Unicom, one of the local Internet Service Providers (ISP), will be carrying out some essential maintenance to their network during the following change windows:

1) from 10:30AM to 11:30AM, 28 Nov 2020 (China time)

 2) from 11:00AM to 12:00PM(midday), 5 Dec 2020 (China time)

There will be an impact on our precious connection of accessing international websites which are usually unavailable over other ISP lines. Therefore, during this change window, users on campus might experience an intermittent connection or slow access to some online academic services, such as Google Search and Google Scholar, but not other global sites, domestic websites and Zoom videoconferencing.

Also, access to GTIIT online services (Email, Moodle, Panopto, and others) from on- or off-campus network will not be affected.

Warm Regards,

Dear All,
Scammers often take advantage of health scares to distribute phishing scams. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spawn dozens of such campaigns, scaring recipients into clicking on malicious links or attachments in emails, text messages or social media posts.

1. Examples of COVID-19 Phishing Scams

  • Fabricated notices from health organizations (e.g., the CDC or local/province health departments)
  • Fake updates from our university, or government, or an employer about policies or procedures to address the risk
  • Phoney websites containing COVID-19 maps and dashboards
  • Information about protecting yourself, your family or your community that contains malicious links or attachments
  • Charitable appeals to help victims of the virus, which are not legitimate

2. How to Protect Against COVID-19/Coronavirus Scams

Be always vigilant for COVID-19/coronavirus scams. If you suspect a message may be a phishing scam, please report it by forwarding the email message as an attachment (or reporting a text or a link to a social media post) to itsupport@gtiit.edu.cn.
Tips for spotting phishing scams are available on https://www.cybersecurity.hk/en/expert-2018-06-01-Phishing-Scam.php. Go directly to health or government sites, such as https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019, to find updated information about the virus and its spread.

3. Secure your password

Never, ever share your password to others, not even a GTIIT staff. Never send your password to someone else via email, in particular. Please bear in mind to treat your password like your ID card. Sharing it with someone is like giving that person authority to sign your name—authority that implies you approve of everything they do in your name, such as sending an offensive message at somebody.
Please contact IT Support at https://helpdesk.gtiit.edu.cn if you have any questions regarding this cybersecurity announcement.

Dear All,

We all are in the hope of taking over a fully functional Research Building, yet late came a formal notification from local authorities that the current supplier cannot install the data outlets in Research Building, and leave us this unfinished project before everybody goes home for the winter break in general, or for Spring Festival in particular.

IT Department is now embarking on all remaining work to this half-baked bread. A few days will be necessary for us to sort out all of these uncompleted IT sockets in the building, then we will seek an initial quote towards the purchasing process with our leadership’s approval. If you would make some changes to some IT sockets in your lab, please try to minimise your request and tell us ASAP so that we can soon initiate the purchasing. After we have the chosen supplier, all data outlets in the functional area in Research Building would be ready within one month.

Should you urgently need the cable network in your lab, please contact itsupport@gtiit.edu.cn for a workaround.

Warm Regards,

IT Department
