Professor Xu will join GTIIT, as an Associate professor of Guangdong-Technion Chemical Engineering program in Spring 2021. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at University of Maryland Baltimore County from 2016 to 2020. He obtained his PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2013) and completed his postdoc training in the Stephanopoulos lab at MIT (2016).\r\n\r\nDr. Xu has received a number of awards and recognitions, including the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad (2012), the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Award (2018), the Biotechnology &amp; Bioengineering (B&amp;B) Daniel IC Wang Award (2020). He served in the editorial board for the journal <em>Metabolic Engineering<\/em> (IF = 7.3) and the journal <em>Current Opinion in Biotechnology<\/em> (IF = 8.3). With the advance of modern computers and the increasing affordability of computing powder they provide, conducting numerical experiments through modeling and simulations becomes a more and more attractive alternative to the expensive pilot scale physical experiments in engineering practice.\u00a0 In many cases, especially for single-phase flow, it has become a common practice to directly utilizing CFD to test, optimize and scale-up different application designs. Nevertheless, CFD software for multiphase flows are far from mature, especially when involving with mass and heat transfer and chemical reactions, and many critical research issues remain before they can be routinely and confidently employed for engineering purposes, especially in chemical, oil\/gas, pharmaceutical, and food industries.\r\n\r\nThe objective of this study is to investigate the polydispersed multiphase with both experimental and numerical methods and develop an accurate and comprehensive physics-based model for polydispersed multiphase flows. By using state-of-art fluid-diagnostic techniques, such as stereo-PIV and high-speed imaging, highly spatial-tempo resolved data will be obtained, and further insight into fluid turbulence, particle movement, and particle-particle interaction could be gained.
