Professor Xu joined GTIIT, as an Associate professor of Guangdong-Technion Chemical Engineering program in Fall 2021. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at University of Maryland Baltimore County from 2016 to 2020. He obtained his PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2013) and completed his postdoc training in the Stephanopoulos lab at MIT (2016).\r\n\r\nDr. Xu has received a number of awards and recognitions, including the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad (2012), the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation Award (2018), the Biotechnology &amp; Bioengineering (B&amp;B) Daniel IC Wang Award (2020), the Biochemical Engineering Journal Young Investigator Award (2021) and the NSFC Excellent Young Scientist Award (\u6d77\u5916\u4f18\u9752). He served in the editorial board for the journal\u00a0<em>Metabolic Engineering<\/em>\u00a0(IF = 9.7) and\u00a0<em>Current Opinion in Biotechnology<\/em>\u00a0(IF = 9.4), as the Associate editor for <em>BioDesign Research<\/em>. Professor Xu published more than 85 journal articles with a google scholar citation of 4440 and an H-index of 33, on world-leading journals including\u00a0<em>Nature Biotechnology, Nature Communications, Nature Chemical Biology, PNAS, Trends in Biotechnology, Metabolic Engineering, Biotechnology &amp; Bioengineering, Current Opinion in Biotechnology and ACS Synthetic Biology<\/em>\u00a0et al.","position_job_benefits":"My research direction driving toward discovery of new reactivity to molecules particularly in organo(metallic) catalysis is largely based on synthetic and mechanistic organometallic chemistry that involves substrate scope study, kinetics, synthesis\/isolation\/characterization of active or resting catalytic species, and collaborative DFT calculations. The<em> first <\/em>research program is the development of well-defined and highly modular transition metal catalytic systems for dearomative multiple hydrofunctionalizations of simple, unactivated pyridines to provide unprecedented functionalized N-heterocycles, which can be useful building blocks particularly in drug discovery and development. The specific target catalysis include ligand-controlled regiodivergent double hydroelementation (E = Si, B, Ge, Sn, S, P, etc.), asymmetric double hydroelementation, and asymmetric tandem triple hydrofunctionalizations. The <em>second<\/em> research program is to accomplish hydroelementation of simple arenes with H[E] reducing agents (E = Si, B, Ge, Sn) via tandem partial hydrogenation-hydroelementation strategy that has been unprecedented. A range of nanoclusters (NC) of (initially) Rh and Ir, and (later) 1st-row transition metals in combination with modular ligands as a stabilizing agent are assumed to hydrogenate simple arenes to partially reduced cyclohexenes.
