Abstract

Solar photovoltaic energy has been playing an increasingly important role in the world’s energy portfolio. It is becoming a key contributor in the global transition to decarbonized electricity generation. In the past decade, perovskite solar cells have emerged as a revolutionary photovoltaic technology, captivating the scientific community with their exceptional properties such as tunable bandgap, low-cost fabrication, and impressive efficiencies. However, reaching their full potential requires overcoming limitations such as stability and efficiency barriers in single-junction devices. This talk will delve into the dynamic field of perovskite photovoltaics, exploring my journey from single-junction cells to the groundbreaking advancements of tandem architectures. I will begin by outlining the fundamental principles and advantages of single-junction perovskite solar cells, highlighting their current performance benchmarks and inherent limitations. The core of the talk focuses on the game-changing concept of tandem perovskite solar cells. I will explore how these multi-junction devices circumvent the efficiency limitations of single-junction cells by harvesting a broader spectrum of sunlight. Key advancements in tandem perovskite architectures and their impact on efficiency improvements will be presented. Furthermore, I will delve into the remaining challenges and future directions of perovskite photovoltaics. By exploring these ongoing research efforts, I will shed light on the promising path towards realizing the full potential of perovskite solar cells, discovering how these game-changing devices are poised to revolutionize the solar energy landscape, and paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Biography

Dr. Jiantao Wang received his bachelor’s degree from Nankai University in 2017, followed by the completion of his Ph.D. in Chemistry at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2021. He did postdoc research at various institutions, including The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2021-2022), North Carolina State University (2022-2023), and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (2023-now). Currently, he is also appointed as a research scientist at a startup company focused on the commercialization of perovskite-based tandem solar cells. His primary research thrust revolves around the design of stable narrow- and wide-bandgap perovskite compositions and their integration into efficient tandem solar cells. His research has been published in academic journals such as Science Advances, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Matter, ACS Energy Letters, etc. He serves as an editorial board member of International Journal of Materials Science and Applications.
