Dr. Farha Arakkaveettil Kabeer is currently working as a Senior Lab Manager in Biotechnology and Food Engineering Program (Food Innovation Lab) of the Guangdong-Technion Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). She received her bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from the University of Calicut in 2006 and Master’s degree in Microbiology from the Mahatma Gandhi University in 2008. Thereafter, she worked as a lecturer in Microbiology in K. E. College (2008-2009), India. After completing her Ph. D in Biotechnology from the University of Kerala in 2015, she joined Dr. Radhakrishnan K V’s group at CSIR-NIIST, India, as a Research Associate-II (2015-2016). Her postdoctoral experiences include her tenure as the DST-SERB-National Postdoctoral Fellow in Prof. Mohamed Hatha’s group at School of Marine Sciences, CUSAT, India (2016-2018) and at Shanghai Jio Tong University, Shanghai, China with Prof. Harold Corke and Prof. Zhongquan Sui (2019-2022).
At present, her research is primarily focused on the development of small molecule biofilm inhibitors, against multidrug-resistant Salmonella sp. using high-throughput screening, drug repurposing, and ‘omics’ approaches. Some of the notable research grant awards secured by her include the Research Fund for International Young Scientists-RFIS-I (Natural Science Foundation of China-NSFC) (2021), Foreign Expert Talent Fund (2022), and DST-SERB-National Postdoctoral Fellowship (2016), UGC-Junior Research Fellowship-National Eligibility (UGC-JRF-NET) (2010) and KSCSTE fellowship (2009). Her expertise and research interests span the bioprospecting of plants and microbes for antibacterial/anticancer drug development, food microbiology, molecular biology, functional genomics, and metagenomics. So far, she has published 25 research articles and two patents.
