                                       2023 NSFC and the British Royal Society collaboration project guideline

According to the cooperation agreement signed and the subsequent consensus reached between the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Royal Society (RS), the two sides will continue to jointly fund the collaboration project in 2023.

I. Project Description

(1) Funding research fields

Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Engineering and Materials Science, Information Science, Medicine.

(2) Funding scale

The funding from NSFC for each project is not more than 100,000 Yuan (there is no indirect cost for this project), and the funding from RS for each project is not more than 12,000 Pounds.

(3) Funding details

The Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will subsidize the international travel expenses of Chinese researchers to visit the UK (the air ticket is in economy class) and the accommodation, dining, and inter-city transportation expenses of British researchers in China. The Royal Society will subsidize the international travel expenses of British researchers to visit China and the accommodation, food, and intercity transportation expenses of Chinese researchers in the UK.

(4) Funding period

The funding period is 2 years. In the application form, the project period should be written as ‘from March 1, 2023, to February 28, 2025’.

II. Applicant Requirements

According to the ‘Measures for the Administration of International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Projects of the Natural Science Foundation of China‘, the applicant for this project must meet the following requirements:

(1)   The Chinese applicant must be the PI or main participant of the NSFC’s research projects (except for cooperation and exchange projects) for 3 years or more (inclusive) concluded after December 31, 2023 ( inclusive) (if the main participants of ongoing research projects would like to be the Chinese applicants, they must have senior professional and technical positions/titles or doctoral degrees, or have the recommendation from 2 scientists/researcher with senior professional and technical positions/titles and in the same field of study, and gain consent from the PI of the ongoing research project). Cooperation should closely focus on the research content of the projects on which the research fund is based.

(2)   British collaborators meet the requirements from RS for domestic applicants.

(3)   Applicants from both China and the UK should submit project applications to the NSFC and the RS respectively, unilateral applications will not be accepted. The UK application guidelines can be found on the following Link:

(4)   This project aims to encourage the establishment of a new cooperative relationship between China and the UK and the participation of young researchers.
