2023 National Natural Science Foundation of China and International Center for Theoretical Physics Cooperation and Exchange Project Guide

According to the cooperation agreement between the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the two sides jointly send young scholars from China to Italy to participate in relevant academic activities organized by ICTP every year, including seminars and training courses.

I. Project Description

(1) Funding field and application code

For the list of academic activities organized by ICTP in 2023, see Annex 1. The fields include mathematics, high-energy physics, condensed matter physics and statistical physics, quantitative life science, geophysics, etc. Please select the corresponding discipline code of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the Department of Life Sciences or the Department of Earth Sciences as the application code 1 according to the content of academic activities.

(2) the scale of funding

It is planned to sponsor about 50 young scholars.

(3) funding intensity

The Natural Science Foundation of China subsidizes the international travel expenses of Chinese young scholars to Italy, and the funding intensity does not exceed 20,000 yuan/item; ICTP bears the local accommodation, meals and inter-city transportation expenses of the participants.

(4) Funding period

See Annex 1 for the specific time of academic activities, and the research period in the application should be filled in from May 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024.

II. Application Conditions

According to the Measures for the Administration of International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, the application for this project must meet the following conditions:

(1) The applicant must be the person in charge or the main participant of the research projects (except cooperation and exchange projects) of the National Natural Science Foundation for more than three years (inclusive) after December 31, 2023.

As applicants, the main participants in the research project must have senior professional and technical positions (titles) or doctoral degrees, or be recommended by two scientific and technical personnel with senior professional and technical positions (titles) in the same research field, and be approved by the person in charge of the research project.

(2) This project only subsidizes the applicant to go to Italy to participate in relevant academic activities, and the academic background of the applicant must be closely related to the theme of the activities.

(3) Please refer to the Project Guide of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2023 for more detailed descriptions of the applicant’s conditions.

III. Restrictions

(1) This project is an international (regional) cooperation and exchange project, and it is not restricted by the stipulation that the total number of projects applied and undertaken by senior professional and technical personnel is limited to two.

(2) Not subject to the restriction that the applicant can only apply for one project of the same type in the same year.

(3) The total number of NSFC-ICTP cooperation and exchange projects applied by the applicant and undertaken by the project leader is limited to one.

(4) other restrictions on the number of applications in the 2023 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guide.

IV. Application Instructions

(1) Matters needing attention of the applicant

Applicants should carefully read the relevant contents in the Project Guide and the Project Guide of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2023 before completing the application form. Project applications that do not meet the project guide and relevant requirements will not be accepted.

  1. English application

Applicants should submit their applications to ICTP according to the specific requirements of academic activities. The application form and deadline can be found on ICTP website: https://www.ictp.it/scientific-calendar.aspx.

  1. Chinese application

Applicants must log in to the Network Information System of the National Science Foundation of China (https://grants.nsfc.gov.cn/egrantweb/) and fill in the Application for International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Project of the National Natural Science Foundation online. The concrete steps are as follows:

(1) Select the “Project Leader” user group to log into the system, and then click “Online Application” to enter the application interface; Click “New Project Application” to enter the selection interface of the science department to which the applied project belongs, and click “Apply for General Science Department Project” to enter the project category selection interface; Click the+sign on the left or the “Expand” button on the right of “International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Projects” to expand the drop-down menu; Click the “Fill in the Application” button on the right side of “Going abroad (territory) to participate in bilateral academic conferences (inter-organization agreement projects)” to enter the interface of selecting “cooperation agreement”; Select “NSFC-ICTP” in the drop-down menu, and then enter the approval number of the project supported by the research fund according to the system requirements. After passing the qualification certification, you will enter the specific application filling interface.

(2) The English name of the project shall be exactly the same as the English name of the academic activities listed in Annex 1, and the SMR number of the academic activities shall be indicated, such as “SMR # 3834 conference on fragmentation and emergency gauge fields in quantum matter”.

(3) The text of the application should introduce the background, schedule, expectation and significance of participating in the academic activities.

(4) Budget compilation requirements. The applicant shall carefully read the contents of the budget compilation requirements in the application notes for the 2023 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guide, and carefully and truthfully compile the National Natural Science Foundation Project Fund Budget Table in strict accordance with the requirements of the Measures for the Management of Fund for Projects Supported by the National Natural Science Foundation (Cai Jiao [2021] No.177) and the Instructions for the Compilation of Fund Budget Table for National Natural Science Foundation Projects.

(5) Requirements of application materials. After the applicant finishes writing the application, he/she will submit the electronic version of the application and the attached materials online, without submitting the paper application. After the project is approved, the paper signature and seal page of the application will be bound at the end of the funded project plan and submitted together. The information signed and sealed shall be strictly consistent with the electronic application.

(2) Acceptance of project application

The online application and receiving period of this project in the network information system of NSFC is from February 1 to March 31, 2023 at 16: 00.
