Guidelines for basic research special projects on domestication, improvement and utilization of perennial rice
In order to implement the national seed industry revitalization strategy and strengthen basic research on perennial rice breeding, the Department of Life Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China has established the “Basic Research on Perennial Rice Domestication, Improvement and Utilization” special project to fund scientific researchers to carry out in-depth Research to reveal the genetic mechanism of perennial rice formation, develop improved new technologies, and create new germplasm.
- Overall scientific goals
Systematically conduct in-depth research on the genetic basis of perennial rice domestication, improvement and utilization, create excellent genes and materials with significant application value, and cultivate new germplasm and new materials through molecular design to provide theory, materials and technology for perennial rice domestication and improvement.
- Core scientific issues
Genetic basis for domestication and improvement of perennial rice.
- Research directions to be funded
(1) Research on the genetic mechanism and technology of direct domestication of long-male wild rice and its interspecific hybridization with Asian cultivated rice to create perennial rice.
(2) Innovation and utilization of important germplasm resources for perennial rice breeding with the goals of “strong perenniality, root (stem) agglomeration, easy cultivation, economic feasibility, and stable yield”.
- Funding period and funding intensity
The total direct cost of this special project is approximately 2 million yuan. There is 1 planned funding project, the direct cost funding intensity is about 2 million yuan/project; The funding period is 5 years, and it is a long-term stable support project. The research period in the application should be filled in as “January 1, 2024-December 31, 2028.”
