Announcement of Application for the 2024 Phase 1 Special Project (Scientific and Technological Activity Project) of the Department of Earth Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China

  1. Positioning and funding scope

  This special project (scientific and technological activity project) is used to fund strategic and management research, academic exchanges, scientific communication and other activities related to the development of earth sciences. Includes the following 3 types:

  1. International (regional) academic conferences and basic research short-term talent training activities held in China from August 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025 (hereinafter referred to as “conference training” projects);

  2. Science communication and popularization activities for primary and secondary school students (hereinafter referred to as “science communication”) carried out based on the national science basic scientific research and teaching talent training base in the field of earth science or key laboratories in related fields (limited to provincial and ministerial levels and above ) project);

  3. Research on discipline development strategies in earth sciences and related fields (hereinafter referred to as “strategic research” projects).

  The average funding intensity of “conference and training” projects shall not exceed 50,000 yuan per project. Under the same conditions, priority will be given to supporting conferences or training activities initiated and led by Chinese scientists. The average funding intensity of “science communication” projects shall not exceed 50,000 yuan per project. The funding intensity of “strategic research” projects is determined independently based on the earth science fields covered by the institute and its primary and secondary application codes. In principle, it should not exceed 300,000 yuan per project.

  The research period is uniformly filled in from August 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025.

  2. Application requirements and precautions

  (1) Application qualifications and restrictions.

  1. Applicants should have senior professional and technical positions (professional titles).

  2. Scientific and technological activities in special projects are not included in the total number of projects applied for and undertaken.

  3. The international (regional) academic conference held by the “Conference Training Category” project applicant in China should be an influential series of conferences initiated by international academic organizations. The project applicant should be a major member of the organizing committee. The electronic version of the application form Attachments must include certification materials from the international academic organization authorizing the conference to be held and the official approval document (scanned copy) from the superior authority of the host unit. For short-term training activities held in China, the project applicant should be the main member of the organizing committee and the lead teacher.

  4. Applicants for “Science Communication” projects should be core members of the National Basic Science Research and Teaching Talent Training Base or formal members of key laboratories. The main participants should include teaching/management personnel from the front lines of middle school/primary education. The above information must be clearly stated in the application.

  5. The topic selection of “strategic research” projects should match the top-level design and strategic planning of the Department of Earth Sciences.

  6. Persons in charge who have received funding from special projects (scientific and technological activity projects) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences in the previous year or the same year are not allowed to apply for the same type of projects continuously.

  (2) Submit an application.

  1. The application submission date is from May 30, 2024 to 16:00 on June 5, 2024.

  2. The application form for this special project is written online. The specific requirements for applicants are as follows:

  (1) Applicants should carefully read the relevant contents of the “National Natural Science Foundation of China Special Project Management Measures”, this project guide and the “2024 National Natural Science Foundation of China Project Guide” before filling in the application form. Application projects that do not comply with the management regulations, project guidelines and related requirements will not be accepted.

  (2) Applicants log in to the Science Fund Network Information System https://grants.nsfc.gov.cn/ (applicants who do not have a system account should apply to the fund management contact of the host institution to open an account), and write the application in accordance with the writing outline and relevant requirements. Book. Applicants should specify the type of scientific and technological activities applied for in the project name, using the structure of “XXX category: XXX project name”. The text of the application should correspond to the type of application being applied for.

  ” Conference training ” projects should include: the background and significance of holding scientific and technological activities, the composition of the organizing committee, the start and end time of the event, participation scope, scale and potential impact, important reports or course names and introductions of the speakers, overseas planned participants List of meeting personnel, expected results, etc.;

  ” Science communication ” projects should include: the background and significance of holding scientific and technological activities, the start and end time of the activities, participation scope, scale and potential impact, feasibility analysis, expected results, etc. The expected results of science and technology activity projects must include research reports or activity summaries related to the activity theme;

  ” Strategic research ” projects should include: the status quo, trends, challenges and opportunities of subject development, strategic research goals and content, research plans, feasibility analysis, expected results, etc.

  If the application is funded, the research report or activity summary will be important materials for final acceptance. Applications for projects with incorrect entries above will not be accepted.

  (3) For the funding category in the application, select “Special Projects”, for the subcategory, select “Science and Technology Activity Projects”, for notes, select “Comprehensive Science and Technology Activity Projects of the Ministry of Science”, and for application code 1, select the Ministry of Earth Sciences according to the specific research content of the application.   (4) Applicants should carefully read the budget preparation requirements in the “2024 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guide” and strictly follow the “National Natural Science Foundation-funded Project Fund Management Measures” and other relevant management regulations as well as the “National Natural Science Foundation Project Fund Management Measures” In accordance with the requirements of “Instructions for Preparation of Fund Budget Table”, the “National Natural Science Foundation Project Fund Budget Table” must be carefully and truthfully prepared.

  (5) After the applicant has completed writing the application, submit the electronic application and attached materials online.

  3. The host institution shall review the authenticity and completeness of the application materials submitted by its applicants. Specific requirements are as follows:

  (1) This special project adopts a paperless application method . The host unit only needs to confirm online and submit the electronic application and attached materials in a timely manner. There is no need to submit a paper application. After the project is approved, bind the signed and stamped paper page of the application at the end of the “Funded Project Plan” and submit it together with it. The signed and stamped information should be consistent with the electronic application form in the information system.

(2) The host unit must complete the review and confirmation online through the information system before the deadline (16:00 on June 5, 2024)
