Abstract

Ferroelectric and thermoelectric materials are two kinds of functional materials, which have been lying at the forefront of materials research. Ferroelectric ceramics have a variety of applications from piezoelectric energy conversion to dielectric energy storage, while thermoelectric materials are used for direct waste heat to electricity conversion and electronic cooling. This talk will first introduce ferroelectric (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN) as a promising lead-free piezoelectric system, focusing on some key strategies to improve the piezoelectric properties of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics to the level of lead-based piezoelectric ceramics or even better. Considering the scientific links and emerging applications, I will also mention our recent work on similar niobate AgNbO3 as a promising lead-free antiferroelectric for dielectric energy storage application. Finally, I will briefly review on the latest advances in the development of high-performance thermoelectric materials, with an emphasis on nanostructure engineering and thermoelectric enhancement mechanisms.

Bio

Prof. Jing-Feng Li is Changjiang scholar distinguished professor of Materials Science and Engineering in Tsinghua University and also serves as deputy director of Tsinghua University-Toyota research center. He joined Tsinghua University as a full professor in 2002 after working in Tohoku University as assistant/associate professors from 1992. He has published 500+ papers (H index 79) and three books including a recent one entitled “Lead-free Piezoelectric Materials” published by WILEY-VCH. Prof. Li now serves as Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Materiomics and associate Editor-in-Chief of Journal of the Chinese Ceramic Society as well as editorial board members for several international journals. He is a foreign fellow of Engineering Academy of Japan, fellow of American Ceramic Society, IEEE Ferroelectric Standing Committee member and Symposium Chair, and board member of International Thermoelectric Society.
