Professor, Head of Physics Program
Office: R425
Research Group Website: Ultrafast Optics Group
Professor Oren Cohen received his PhD from Technion, on research done in the group of Mordechai Segev, then moved to post-doc position in JILA (joint institute of the University of Colorado at Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology), to work with Profs. Margaret Murnane and Henry Kapteyn, and in 2008 returned to the Department of Physics at the Technion as a faculty member.
Prof. Cohen’s current research (theoretical and experimental), include symmetries and selection rules in nonlinear optics and their utilization for ultrafast spectroscopy, e.g. diagnostics of chirality, generation and applications of high harmonic generation with circular polarization, developing a microscope for high-resolution ultra high-speed imaging of non-repetitive phenomena, diagnostics of ultrashort laser pulses, and strong-light quantum optics.
Prof. Cohen received several awards and fellowships, including the 2003 Israeli Physical Society outstanding Ph.D. student prize, a Rothschild post-doctoral fellowship (2005), Alon fellowship for outstanding young scientists in Israeli universities (2009-2011), Horev fellowship for Leaders in Science and Technology program at the Technion (2009-2011), the 2011 Wolf Foundation Krill Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research, the 2013 and 2020 Hershel Rich Technion Innovation award, the 2015 Henry Taub prize for academic excellence, and ERC consolidator grant (2019). In 2022 he was made a Fellow of the Optica Society (formally OSA, Optical Society of America) “For important contributions in nonlinear optics, including generation and applications of circularly-polarized high-order harmonics and observation of 3D spatio-temporal solitons “
When not chasing photons, Oren may be found in a basketball court or a chess board, playing for the Technion teams or with his four boys.
