• Surface is the outermost layer, the point of materials interacting with the external environment and other materials.  Surface science is an important area of study since surface plays a crucial role in processes such as catalysis, adhesion, wear, and corrosion, with applications in metallurgy, thin films and surface coatings, the chemicals and polymer industries, nano-microelectronics, and biosurface activities, to name a few. Surface engineering is a wide-ranging, enabling technology, which aims at modification of microstructure and/or composition of the near-surface region of a component to improve surface-dependent engineering properties. Surface analysis techniques are therefore very important to understand surface mechanics, physics and chemistry of a material and investigate the efficacy of surface engineering, material defects, or the development of new devices. This course covers those techniques used routinely for surface analysis as well as those employed for more fundamental scientific studies.
