• "The aim of this course will be twofold: a) introduce to students how material properties are affected by extreme thermodynamic conditions, ranging from high axial strain, due to substrate mismatch, to shock/detonation events that induce extreme pressure and temperature conditions and b) how we can use extreme conditions to synthesize novel materials with outstanding physicochemical properties. The various experimental techniques aiming to mimic such conditions in a laboratory environment and how to probe relevant material properties will be also discussed. The main goal of the course is for the students to become aware and familiar with a 2D phase space (pressure and temperature) and how material properties and synthesis are affected by this 2D phase space. Moreover, ultrafast phenomena (extreme condition events lasting for < 1 ??s) will be briefly discussed. Finally, geoscience related systems under extreme conditions will be discussed."
