• Newtonian fluid dynamics have been found satisfactory to describe flow phenomena of gases and liquids with small molecules. Polymer liquids do not obey the rules of classical Newtonian fluid dynamics. There are significant fundamental quantitative and qualitative differences between macromolecular polymeric fluids and fluids made up of small molecules. While the rheology of low molecular weight fluids is more or less well understood, the rheology of polymeric and other non-Newtonian liquids remains a challenge.Polymer rheology is important for understanding plastics flow and manufacture, behavior of biological fluids, performance of lubricants, applications of paints, processing of foodstuffs, etc.
