•  Surface engineering is a wide-ranging, enabling technology, which aims at modification of microstructure and/or composition of the near-surface region of a component to improve surface-dependent engineering properties. Surface analysis techniques are therefore very important to understand surface mechanics, physics and chemistry of a material and investigate the efficacy of surface engineering, material defects, or the development of new devices. This course covers those techniques used routinely for surface analysis as well as those employed for more fundamental scientific studies.
