From November 16 to 17, 2024, the 49th International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia Regional Contest (Shanghai) was successfully held at Shanghai University. On November 16, the competition opened in Shanghai University Gymnasium, and on November 17, the official competition started on time. Within 5 hours, 352 teams made 5,682 submissions, and after intense competition, 34 teams won the gold medal, 68 teams won the silver medal, and 102 teams won the bronze medal.

The "One Paper of Pure White Kites" team from GTIIT performed exceptionally well and ultimately won the silver medal. This marked the first medal for GTIIT in the ICPC competition.

The Contest was organized by ICPC Asia East Regional Committee and hosted by Shanghai University. This year, the contest attracted 352 outstanding teams from 222 well-known universities, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and University of Science and Technology of China.

The "One Paper of Pure White Kites" team from GTIIT, led by Yijie Xue (Cohort 2024  Mathematics with Computer Science), and team members Yiran Zhang (Cohort 2024 Materials Science and Engineering), Yuhang Guo (Cohort 2023 Biotechnology and Food Engineering), competed tenaciously and ultimately won the silver medal.

The ICPC, initiated by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in 1970, is an annual international competition aimed at showcasing the innovative abilities, team spirit, and problem-solving skills of college students under pressure. The contest consists of two main stages: regional contests (Regional) and the World Finals, with each season lasting about nine months. It attracts nearly 50,000 college students from over 2,000 universities in more than 100 countries and regions across six continents. After more than four decades of development, ICPC has become the most influential international programming competition for college students and is known as the Olympics of computer software.

Participants compete in teams representing their universities, with each team comprising up to three current students, subject to certain age restrictions, and allowed to participate in a maximum of two regional contests per year. Compared to other computer programming contests, the ICPC is characterized by its large number of problems, requiring teams to solve at least seven problems within five hours. Additionally, with three team members sharing one computer, time management becomes even more critical. Therefore, solid professional skills, good team collaboration, and strong psychological resilience are key to winning.

This year marks GTIIT's first participation in the ICPC. Since the team's establishment, members have continuously improved their individual and team collaboration skills through online contests and training sessions. The team's outstanding performance in the ICPC competition is closely related to the university's strong support and the members' hard work. In the upcoming 49th ICPC Asia Regional Contest and Asia Final, they will continue to strive for higher achievements.
