On November 6-7, the 2022 “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English Contests Guangdong Division was held remotely. Three students from Guangdong-Israel Technion Institute of Technology (GTIIT) achieved excellent performance.

Zhang Yunzhe (Cohort 2022 Biotechnology and Food Engineering Program) won the first prize and Li Peixuan (Cohort 2020 Mathematics with Computer Science Program) won the second prize in the English Writing Contest; Hu Shennan (22 MSE) won the third prize in the English Public Speaking Contest.

Congratulations!

Shennan and Yunzhe shared with us their preparation and thoughts about attending the contests.

Shennan: “To prepare for the contest, I first framed my structure, and then searched for examples to enrich the content; at last, I polished the whole speech. After searching for examples related to the topic, I bonded all to my idea”. Shennan also talked about the advantage of the English teaching and speaking environment in GTIIT, “the fact that I am studying in an English teaching and speaking environment helped me a lot because here at GTIIT, we can better master English, and our accent is better.”

The all-English teaching mode was highlighted by Yunzhe as well, “I am a freshman at GTIIT, but I believe that after a year of putting English into use every day, I will have a better command of English.” According to Yunzhe, it is not easy to step out one’s comfort zone but he believed that just one step may make one to be in front of others. “Just dream it, do it” Yunzhe used the GTIIT moto to encourage students to take part in the contests.

Shennan held a similar point of view with Yunzhe on stepping out the comfort zone. He further added: “don’t miss any opportunity to participate in these competitions, because it is extremely helpful for us to enrol in foreign universities.”

For the advice on studying and improving English, Yunzhe had an unexpected recommendation—the Application “XiaoXXXshu” (小X书). She found there are plenty of notes taken by different posters according to different competitions; the summarization is precise and short, and the analysis of previous years’ quizzes is also a good resource to study.

Hosted by the Ministry of Education of Guangdong Province and co-organized by the Advisory Board for College Foreign Language Teaching and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the Contest is the highest-level English competition for college students in Guangdong Province, which attracted over 600 contestants from 67 schools this year.
