With the theme of “The Untraveled Path”, the serial activities of the 19th English Festival includes speech competition, singing competition and debate competition. Mr. Wang Yide (Mechanical Engineering and Robotics Program) and Jing Ruibo (Mathematics with Computer Science Program), 2 first-year students from Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology (hereinafter referred as “GTIIT”) won the second prize in the speech competition and the third prize of the singing competition respectively among the contestants from Shantou University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jinan University and Xiamen University.

Yide had the interview to share his experience in preparing for and participating in the competition. He found it easier to prepare a speech with a specific framework first and then more details later. For example, he had the speech in theme of “The Untraveled Path” by combining the story of Red Army with his campus life in GTIIT.

Yide believed that the all English-teaching environment in GTIIT had significantly improved his speaking skills and learning ability. He also gave special thanks to his parents and the English teacher Dr. Miki Steiner for their continuous motivation, inspiration and guidance given to him.

Although participating in competitions is challenging and time-consuming, Yide held the view that it is always a great opportunity to challenge one’s limit, and a valuable experience for everyone. He also mentioned that it is important to have one’s own style when participating such event.

Organized by ELC, Shantou University, the English Festival aims to stimulate students' interest in learning English and cultivate students' English thinking and expression skills. It strives to build a platform with different era elements that students can expand their international perspective, fully enhance themselves and express themselves through the participation in this activity.
